My Typical Summer Day as an Au Pair

In Italy, it almost feels as if time slows down. I typically wake up at about 9:30 every day (which is early to me since in America I usually wake up at 10/10:30…ha). In the morning, I make myself a cappuccino and eat a small breakfast, usually just a cookie or two. This is a typical breakfast in Italy.

Then, since the kids have been at camp the past few weeks, I have time to myself. I usually work on a blog post or help the mom clean. It is always a relaxing morning here. By the time I know it, the kids are back for lunch at noon. Lunch and dinner seem to be different in Italy than in America. Everyone sits down and eats a big meal for lunch- usually pasta. Pasta, meat, and salad are commonly served. Lunch may last an hour to an hour and a half, then it’s time for more coffee.

Nothing is ever rushed. After lunch, I help the kids with English. I spend 45 minutes to an hour with each boy. Then at 4, they go back to camp until 7. I usually have about an hour of free time until the little one comes home. I spend time with her until dinner, usually. It is not easy to teach her yet, so I try to say English words and show her nursery rhymes on Youtube. She knows a few colors, numbers, and how to say “thank you”.

Around 8/8:30, we eat dinner. Dinner is like an event. Usually, more pasta, meat, and some kind of veggies are served. Always beer or wine as well. After dinner, it’s always different. Sometime we go on a long bike ride for some gelato, or we spend time outside since the sun has gone down and it is isn’t sweltering hot anymore. Or, if we are all too tired, we shower and go to bed.

It’s been a relaxing summer so far. I’m planning on going to Bologna next weekend, and then Verona the next weekend. After that, the family and I travel to the mountains for a week. In the beginning of August, we go to Rome, and then Latina for a month. I really can’t complain about anything. It’s been a perfect summer so far.
